Reliable Planning and Operation with DCIM tools

Operating a data center requires more than just good planning – it also calls for effective management and regular process audits

Early this year, a data center located in a desert of all places suffered major damage when a roof drainage channel in an internal wall became blocked and left the IT space knee-deep in water. Although the center was correctly equipped with subfloor sensors that provided the proper early warning, the management personnel failed to respond quickly enough due to a lack of instructions on what action to take. Specifically, there was no indication in the documentation of who to contact in the event of water ingress. Continue reading “Reliable Planning and Operation with DCIM tools”

DCIM – From Metrics to KPIs

American engineer, statistician, professor, author, lecturer and management consultant Dr. W. Edwards Deming once said

“In God we trust; all others bring data.”

While this is somewhat funny, the point is also very clear. Without proper data to back our ideas, strategies and journeys, we’re merely guessing and hoping for the best. However a very common challenge amongst data centre managers trying to mature the management of data centres, is best described similar to the Big Data challenge of other industries. Data Center Business Value Dashboards in Action

The data center was seen as a cost factor in the past, whereas for modern organizations it is the driver of business. Put a value to its contribution by measuring the right values with data center business value dashboards. The Truly Dynamic Data Center: Sci-Fi or Reality?

I recently wrote an Expert Paper explaining Data Center Efficiency in practice using smart tools and methods to ensuring an energy efficient operation of a data centre, without taking on risk in the process.

While writing the paper I came to re-visit one of my big dreams for our beloved data center industry: The truly dynamic data center, capable of self-optimising the efficiency, while honouring any dynamic load requirement at any times. Data Center Business Value Dashboards

Energy efficiency is an important strategic goal for data center operators for a number of reasons. Several indicators and metrics that are widely discussed today are available to help manage data centers successfully from an energy perspective. However, energy efficiency is just one way of looking at a data center: Data center service providers, like enterprise data centers, colocation providers and others, find themselves in a challenging and fast-changing competitive environment. Because of these challenges, data center managers also need additional key performance indicators to link operations to business and to ensure they are on track regarding their overall strategies. Stop trying to predict the future

Throughout our glorious history, many people have tried to predict our future either through generic – often cryptic – lyrics or through firm believe based on current knowledge.

Most famous for his deeds in this category is probably Nostradamus, a French physician, author, translator, astrological consultant, but more than anything: A dreamer!
His claim to fame is basically based on 2 facts: Continue reading “Stop trying to predict the future”

Data Center IT Agility and Control

A rapid rate of change complicates every facet of datacenter management, and server-centric compute models are too cumbersome for today’s highly variable workloads. Is it possible to optimize resources and operations in such dynamic environments? In this presentation, learn how to replace manual, hardware-defined application provisioning and management with a highly automated, software-defined resource model and orchestration layer that enables flexibility, simplified on-demand capital efficiency, and lower TCO. 10 Stepping Stones to a Successful DCIM Adoption

Today there is much talk about the real value of DCIM and some are even busy declaring the whole DCIM initiative as a failure. However its far from true and honestly speaking, representing a visionary vendor in this space, I’m actually glad to see some of the hype from analysts and giant vendors setteling, so that we now get the opportunity to talk about what really matters for organisations.
