Telecommunication providers need to learn how services can be developed more flexible and agile than ever before in order to seize the opportunity of digitization. The technological foundation for this change is formed by Virtualization: Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Networking (SDN). But the real challenge is yet to come. FNT was included in Gartner’s March 2016 “Critical Capabilities for Data Center Infrastructure Management Tools” report which evaluated DCIM products from nine of the 15 vendors in the October 2015 Magic Quadrant for Data Center Infrastructure Management Tools.
We recently briefed the market analyst group 451 Research and Andy Lawrence, Vice President of Research for Datacenter Technologies published an Impact Report titled, “FNT expands as end-to-end infrastructure management message resonates.”
The report outlines FNT Software’s comprehensive solutions for data center infrastructure management, cable and network management, and service management through its FNT Command and FNT ServicePlanet offerings. It also cites the company traction in the marketplace within enterprise and service providers.

Shutdowns and maintenance outages are toxic to the efficiency of data centers. Operators are now using predictive maintenance to optimize their facilities.
When looking to the future, we have long since swapped the mystic’s crystal ball for the IT-based disciplines of analytics and business intelligence. These modern methodologies are typically used to mine historical data, draw lessons from the past, and thus understand the present. Today, they are being succeeded by data science, which aims to offer insights into the future that would challenge the fabled Oracle of Delphi. But while the Oracle only spoke on the seventh day of each month (outside of the annual winter shutdown), this modern mathematical and analytical functionality is available 24/7. Data Center Colocation Providers are operating in a challenging and competitive environment. Commoditization of space and power is driving colocation providers to differentiate through an extended product and service portfolio. This diversification requires management solutions that support streamlined operational processes in order to deliver these services with the highest level of quality at minimal cost. Operating a data center requires more than just good planning – it also calls for effective management and regular process audits
Early this year, a data center located in a desert of all places suffered major damage when a roof drainage channel in an internal wall became blocked and left the IT space knee-deep in water. Although the center was correctly equipped with subfloor sensors that provided the proper early warning, the management personnel failed to respond quickly enough due to a lack of instructions on what action to take. Specifically, there was no indication in the documentation of who to contact in the event of water ingress. Continue reading “Reliable Planning and Operation with DCIM tools”
American engineer, statistician, professor, author, lecturer and management consultant Dr. W. Edwards Deming once said
“In God we trust; all others bring data.”
While this is somewhat funny, the point is also very clear. Without proper data to back our ideas, strategies and journeys, we’re merely guessing and hoping for the best. However a very common challenge amongst data centre managers trying to mature the management of data centres, is best described similar to the Big Data challenge of other industries. The data center was seen as a cost factor in the past, whereas for modern organizations it is the driver of business. Put a value to its contribution by measuring the right values with data center business value dashboards. Rather than concentrating on technical details of data center operations, business oriented indicators put value to your data center output and allow you to involve your senior management. I recently wrote an Expert Paper explaining Data Center Efficiency in practice using smart tools and methods to ensuring an energy efficient operation of a data centre, without taking on risk in the process.
While writing the paper I came to re-visit one of my big dreams for our beloved data center industry: The truly dynamic data center, capable of self-optimising the efficiency, while honouring any dynamic load requirement at any times. The ongoing digitization of the world around us – driven by social networking, the increasing prevalence of mobile devices, cloud technologies, and the explosion in big data – is leading to major changes in the needs, expectations, and behavior of both the business community and society as a whole. Old business models are evolving rapidly, forcing IT to respond quickly and flexibly. IT and data center managers are becoming increasingly focused on secure, efficient, and flexible deployment of demand-based IT services.
